Problem Space

How to facilitate people who has the intention of adopting pets but while has no idea about:
the responsibilities, the process of adoption, and the right pet fit?

Solution

A responsive website serves as a platform for potential adopters that provides:

  • Information pages that educate potential adopters about responsibilities of pet adoption
  • A quiz that help people identify whether the user is a good fit to adopt pet, and also recommends pet for user
  • A dashboard for the stakeholder to understand the user data

UX Research

In order to understand the context of pet adoptions and the need of potential adopters, we conducted secondary research and guerrilla research. Throughout the research, we identified the the uncertainty that most potential adopters are having right now about the responsibilities, decision making and pet choosing.

By researching on several of the main websites that serve as a pet adoption platform, we found following issues regarding to the process:

  • Lacking of education about responsibilities before decision making
  • No process that helps user to make the decision about whether the user should adopt a pet
  • No data generated for the stakeholders to understand the users' mental model and expectations

After we finish the secondary research, we identified the main problems about the current situation and based on that, we conducted over 20 interviews with people either have or don't have pet experience about their intention and understanding of adopting pets. Among all participants, we identified some common issues that people are having.

  • People have no idea about the process of pet adoption and the responsibility that comes along
  • 64% of the participants are not sure whether they should adopt a pet and 45% of them are not sure about what pet to adopt.
  • People are expecting better communication through official channels

Ideation

Based on what we discovered in the first phase, we mapped out the user's journey, consolidated our findings into three personas, ideated possible scenarios for different roles and need, and used storyboards to show and validate the needs through speed-dating session.

Based on what we learned in the user research, we mapped out the current user journey map for both pet adopters and service provider. The main pain points in the journey map were identified in the explore, visit and decision making phase, which made us think about how different users are experiencing the journey and what we can do to improve the experience.

Based on the potential users and stakeholders in the journey map, we consolidated our information into four targeted personas and analyzed how they would like to be benefited from our intervention.

Having all ideas and the using scenarios, we conducted 10 Speed Dating sessions with potential users of the platform and validated the actual need from them, to confirm what are the functions that are valuable to them. After the sessions, we decided to focus on following features to develop further in our prototype:

  • Communication between users and stakeholders
  • Education information for potential users to understand responsibilities
  • A quiz that helps potential adopter to make decision and suggests pet fit
  • Dashboard with user data for stakeholders to understand the user

Web Design

To implement the ideas and features we had from ideation phase, we created site map to map out the workflow of the website and created Hi-fi screens in Figma. The showcase below displays certain use cases of how different stakeholders can interacted and be benefited from our product design.
